DECODER
Innovation Platform
Client: Aperto
My Role: Ideator, Facilitator
Experienced with both sides of the creative culture {the idea-driven and the technology-driven}, I am stoked about their potential to clash. So I have created a clash for Aperto: DECODER, a generative event format that stands for the deciphering of creative patterns, communications systems, and different methods of working. The DECODERs themselves are either internal fence-jumpers or external insurgents who shine a light into agency land.

We decided to open our house to smart people who teach us how to decode communication patterns far away from the digital things we’re usually dealing with. The initial DECODER workshop with Eike König {Hort} focused not on results but on a question: How does one approach a task or assignment in an open, unconventional manner? One answer: under the direction of Berlin architect Van Bo Le-Mentzel, six teams each developed a 1 SQM ‘House’ designed to invite outsiders into that team’s mission and purpose. And with our friends from Prinzessinnen Gardens we answered the question: how can we push the gardening trend into the realm of interaction? Our answer: Interactive Office Gardening! By connecting Urban Gardening with the Maker Movement, we also connect the biological ecosystem with the digital — and thereby create something unique and very Aperto-like.
DECODER participants are forced to work across team borders and corporate worlds and cultures, to interact with one another, and – far removed from their computer screens – to create a product together that‘s more than just tangible, it‘s ‘enterable.’
DECODER is grassroots, embodying creative irreverence and the freedom to fail, while also embracing exploration of the unknown.
DECODER was featured in: PAGE, Lürzers Archive, Design made in Germany, FluxFM, KiKa, RBB, 1st Russian TV, ZDFNeo, ALEX TV and Der Tagesspiegel.

DECODER #001 — just do it
No guidelines, no restrictions – just do it. The objective of DECODER #001 was to tackle one’s own creative tasks, in a completely open and unconventional way. The first DECODER weekend workshop was led by none other than Eike König, one of the most important and celebrated German communication designers.

DECODER #002 — small but powerful
What is a square meter? Why does this unit of measurement exist? And what happens when one builds a house to fit on exactly one square meter? Together with the designer and architect behind Hartz IV furniture and the founder of the 1Sqm House Movement, we resolved to find out. The result: six different houses and six different use cases.

“The world operates according to various codes: how to run a company, generate ideas, or determine property prices. At DECODER workshops, we aim to understand, question, and decipher these codes.”

DECODER #003 — When flowers start to tweet
For the third edition of DECODER, we joined forces with Berlin horticultural project, the Prinzessinnen Gardens, to design an interactive office garden. More than growing vegetables, this is where ideas and concepts for the digital world are cultivated. A place where the flowers tweet when they’re thirsty, if it’s too sunny or shady, if the courtyard’s too loud or if vibrations are disturbing their growth.
