Design in a Post-COVID World

muse case labs Sessions

I have the great honour of giving talks to the students of muse case labs, a Berlin-based tech education company. They seek to rediscover teamwork – working hand in hand and learning to truly see and think differently.

Muse case labs are a group of experienced digital creators with years of teaching experience and many successfully launched projects under their belts. They are based in Berlin and Stuttgart and are running an Advanced UX/UI Design Bootcamp, and their graduates are, hopefully all, going to be hitting the job market as not juniors but intermediate level and higher.

They invited me to prepare their students for the design job market in interactive Q&A sessions. We discuss topics such as the post-COVID-19 situation and current lay-offs in the start-up world. About relevant players in the design market, requirements for the skill profile of product designers, salary benchmarks in the industry and negotiation strategies.

“Somewhere along the way, we forgot about teamwork. Perhaps, it's because we've read too many autobiographies of tech entrepreneurs. But no matter what the books and the films say, nothing was ever built by just one person. It's always built through teamwork and collaboration because, quite simply, two brains are better than one: And for the record, those who don't work together and share ideas, sink not swim.”

A selection of other relevant topics: the difference between Product Designer and UX/UI designer titles, the challenges for designers in an agency environment versus in a startup or tech company, and the meaningfulness of technical challenges.

The global market situation looks increasingly grim – with record inflation, energy price and tax hikes, hiring freezes in the tech sector, stock market crashes and the possible end of crypto. Therefore, it is more important than ever for students to specialize, know their market value and have a good understanding of the movements in the industry. Designers have a unique opportunity to rebuild their practice with a new perspective, incorporating all they have learned since the start of the pandemic. Because apart from all the disturbing news, one thing is certain: there will continue to be a massive demand for designers due to demographic change and the increasing digitalization of entire industries.

Key Takeaways

  • Remote work isn’t the same as distributed work
  • Distributed work means a stronger emphasis on soft skills and core competencies
  • Remote work has brought more soft aspects into play (e.g., number of days in the office, flexible working hours, hours per week)
  • Empathy in use: greater attention to customer values and designing products that are even more inclusive and accessible than ever
  • Total compensation is always a package of different individual components
  • Which of these components are offered depends on the employer's industry and specific role
